History
Coppertops was born out of a love for paper and bringing people together. Founder Jessica Burke was building a paper-party business in December 2013 when a customer asked for a new way to gift wine. The request inspired the creation of the Bottle Wrap, which was so well-received by the customer and her gift recipient that Jessica had an “aha” moment. Wine gift bags were so ubiquitous, unshapely, and stale. What if Coppertops could build a whole line of eco-friendly alternatives for better gifting for wine and spirits? In Spring 2014, we found our first retail partner, and later that summer, Argonaut (Colorado’s largest wine and liquor retailer) agreed to sell our products. In late summer 2014, as Jessica rounded out the line and shifted focus to selling wholesale, Katie Flanagan joined in.
By Christmas of that year, we were in 19 Metro Denver stores, and in 2015, Coppertops grew by 25%, expanding into Texas and Louisiana. We leveraged positive product reception and a distributor partnership to gain the national Whole Foods Market account in 2016 – leading to 400%+ growth and presence in more than 230 stores.
In addition to expanding our geographic footprint, we have grown beyond our basic line of packaging for wine and spirits. As of 2017, we have 15 products in our “Better than a Bag” line, 5 new “Gifting Food” products, and 4 designs of our “Gift Paper for the Planet.”
